History of Gunwharf

The location of Gunwharf holds a significant part in history. In the 12th century Richard I originally began working in the region by building a dock for Royal Galleys. By the 1500's, it had established itself as the location of Portsmouth defences and by the late 17th century it's prominence had increased further with the establishment of Gunwharf as a major ammunition for the storage of weaponry for the navy and the army to help protect Portsmouth. As ships and weaponry advanced and the need to discharge the arsenal decreased, the Ordnance Board was abolished in 1855, and the Gunwharf was abandoned.

When the land was taken up by the Navy in 1923, it was renamed HMS Vernon. Up to its decommissioning, it remained a naval base with a focus on mine warfare. Once the Navy no longer required HMS Vernon, the Ministry of Defence sold the surplus land to free up funds to invest in other defence spending priorities.

The Portsmouth City Council then decided the area should be utilised to increase the prosperity of the community. Their objectives were to revitalise a vacant city centre site, opening up the waterfront to the public, creating jobs, enhancing the city's appeal and drawing in more customers.
